Everyone who dives and swims, sooner or later encounters jellyfish underwater, beautiful and photogenic creatures. Few people know that this is a life form of stinging invertebrates. Thanks to unique stinging cells filled with poison, these two-layered animals with an intestinal cavity successfully hunt and defend themselves in the underwater world. When touched by a person, stinging cells shoot out and pierce the skin, injecting poison. Depending on its toxicity, a person feels either a slight burning sensation or severe pain with numbness of the affected area and more serious symptoms, up to and including death. The head of the RuDIVE group and candidate of biological sciences Dmitry Valerievich Orlov will talk about the biology, geography, classification of jellyfish and will analyze how to avoid injuries and properly provide first aid to victims.
