Maria Olshevskaya is an international master of sports in underwater sports, a Russian record holder in freediving, a Guinness World Record holder for static breath holding in ice-cold water without a wetsuit and a Russian record holder for deep diving in ice-cold water without a wetsuit, a freediving instructor and trainer.
Maria started freediving in 2013 in Bryansk. And it immediately became clear that this was a story in which Olshevskaya could achieve a lot: after a basic course and only three months of training without any sports experience, Maria dove 150 meters in a pool on one breath. And in 2015, Maria was already at the World Championship in Belgrade as part of the Russian freediving team. After a series of sporting failures, a decisive choice between a stable engineering profession and completely vague prospects of freediving in favor of the latter, as well as several years of instructor in Bali, Maria found herself in the very center of searching for her future goal in freediving.
Cold water (very cold water!) appeared in the life of Maria Olshevskaya by chance in 2019. A vacation with friends in Finland turned out to be boring and Maria entertained herself by swimming in a local reservoir, the water in which was quite invigorating. The athlete found the sensations interesting and Maria continued to swim in open water without a wetsuit after returning to her homeland. And in 2022, she set her first Guinness record, lying for 4 minutes 17 seconds, holding her breath in icy water in just a swimsuit. In 2023, Maria set a national record for diving with a breath hold in length with fins in a pool. She dived 240 meters, breaking the record of the legendary Natalia Molchanova, which could not be broken in Russia for 8 long years.
And here it is, 2024. Baikal. March. Ice. And very cold water. Around the hole there is a support group, wrapped up from head to toe (it is not hot in March on Baikal) and Maria in a bright red swimsuit and a swimming cap. The result is 40 meters deep in fins under the ice of the deepest lake in the world without a wetsuit and a Russian record that is cold to even look at.
What Maria does is not for everyone. For composure in every sense of the word, for immense persistence and not everyone can understand love for ice freediving, we will present Maria Olshevskaya with our award and give her a hearty ovation. And she will tell us herself why she does it and what else she dreams of as a freediver.
